A few years back my husband and I were relocated to an area that was dry and arid and had poor air quality. Not only were there factories, but it was also an area prone to wild fires, and was a particularly dry year.

We noticed right away a difference in our breathing, both of us were regularly stuffed up (or bunged up, as my English husband would say;)
Worst of all, I had started to snore—GASP! It not only annoyed Benny to no end, I was consistently waking up with a sore throat, and not feeling rested. We knew something had to be done.
We searched high and low for and air purifier that would keep our entire house free of allergens, removing the the particles and bacteria. It needed to be something that would last for years and be durable. We found decent models in the $80-120 range, and tried some out, but they didn’t meet our need of WHOLE HOUSE filtration.
Benny found the Austin Heathmate Air Purifier on Amazon. I will admit, I balked at the price, and couldn’t believe that my normally quite frugal husband was willing to spend that much to clean the air.
We do believe in the idea of buying for life. Instead of having to replace the item every few years, which ultimately costs more, not only for you but for the environment. I watched The Story of Stuff a few years back, and it really opened my eyes to the destruction of our planet through the making of cheap goods.
So I listened, as he made his case, thinking he would never be able to convince me it was worth it. He started by reading me the benefits listed on the product description on Amazon:
- Very effective at removing particles in the air including dust, pollens and smoke elements
- Great at removing chemicals and gases from the air
- Removes viruses and bacteria
- Designed to last for years, removing all air pollutants and delivering the freshest of air
- Will cleanse the air for areas up to 1500 sq ft
I was super impressed that it removed not only dust and pollen, as suspected, but also smoke elements, chemicals and gases. We live in an area susceptible to wildfires, so this was especially appealing.
He also read me some reviews:
“I moved back into my home after spending a number of years in Colorado after leaving all my furniture, etc. to fend for itself. After 3 months of being home, I developed chronic cough, phlegm, etc. and even vacuuming and dusting wasn’t cutting it. So I ordered two of these, one for the front of the house and one for my master suite, plus a Austin Air Healthmate Jr. for the guest room. I couldn’t be happier with the products. They are the best at what they do for the money which is about half of what you’d pay for an IQ-Air unit. Of course I did have the carpets shampooed also. But, I would definately spend the money on these again. Highly recommend for quiet operation, sturdy construction, price, and followup costs for filter changes.” Mike – 5 stars
“We have been using this for 3 months now, we were worried about the air quality in our house and I decided on this after doing a bit of research. The unit works great, in fact i put it on the medium setting on a timer which turns it on 3 times a day for one hour and still there has been a substantial amount of dust reduction. The unit is very noisy on the highest setting, you won’t like this thing in the living room while watching television, but if you like white noise while sleeping then it won’t be a problem in the bedroom. On the highest setting the manual says it uses about 100 watts so it’s not that pricey to run it intermittently or constantly if needed. Also, it really does remove cooking smells from the house because of the charcoal.” BigLou – 5 stars
What I was most persuaded by was the fact that it cleans 1500 sq ft. This meant that we only needed one device rather than 3 to keep our space purified. At $120 a pc, this was still slightly more, but only one unit to plug in, which will save on energy costs– and one item to move around with us. (We tend to move a LOT.)
What finally sold me was the free shipping through Amazon, and the peace of mind of knowing that it was purchased through such a reputable company, who would take it back if we didn’t like it.
I am pleasantly surprised to say that I think it was one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. We no longer have the sniffles and the snoring has completely stopped. Our home smells clean and fresh at all times, even after cooking smelly foods. Gone are the days of walking into your bedroom only to have it smell of bacon or tacos. We have moved 3 times since buying it, and it gets a place of honor in the center of each of our homes.
I love it’s sleek black design, (also available in white and sandstone) with curved edges makes for a handsome appliance. It has a sturdy cord, and steady casters that roll around easily, even on carpet.
On setting 1 it is whisper quiet, and gently circulates air through out your space. This is the setting we leave it on through much of fall and winter, kicking it up a notch when cooking. Setting 2 is slightly louder, but still akin to white noise, and non offensive. We utilize this a lot in the summer, as it keeps the air moving and cools the space.
Setting 3 is loudest, if the Austin were in your lounge, you’d have to turn the tv up a few notches to hear it comfortably. We use this setting when the air is especially bad, and needs to be filtered out, such as when you come home from a long vacation, or when there is a wild fire…
OR when your husband has a poker party complete with cigars–naughty, naughty! 😉
Benny claimed it was “A good way to put her through her paces–see what she’s really got!” I must say, it was effective, kept the den from being too smoky during the party, and by morning there was no linger odor.
In the end, it was DEFINITELY worth the investment, if just to stop the snoring alone! I know that we’ll have it for many years and homes to come, and it won’t end up in a landfill. If you are searching for the best air filter, look no further. Clean, pure air for the win!
My Sister Marie was soooo impressed by the air quality difference, and seeing it work it’s making as I burned the bruschetta (charred, amirite??) She purchased for her place as well! She lives in a smaller condo, and her 8 year old son suffers from allergies, so she opted for the less expensive (but still powerful!) model, the Junior Plus.
It is a SuperBlend Air Cleaner with a true HEPA medical filter that traps 99.97% of all particulates larger than 0.3 microns and removes harmful gasses for chemically sensitive persons–great for after a remodel, painting or new carpet. It does however only boast TRUE HEPA filteration for 30 sq ft, good for a child’s room. She moves it around her house, and feels it does a great job.
